Why Is Bottled Water Your Problem? 8 of every 10 plastic bottles end up in landfills. This transalates into 38 BILLION bottles that end up as garbage or litter each year for the United States alone! Water bottles buried in landfills can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade. Water bottles leak toxic additives into the groundwater. The plastic leaches potentially hazardous industrial chemicals into the water it contains. The FDA requires bottled water companies to test for microbiological content only once per week versus municipal water systems, which are required to test for microbes several times each day. Similarily, public water systems are required to test for chemical water contaminants four times as often as bottled water companies. Bottled water companies are not required to test for cryptosporidum, which infected more than 400,000 Milwaukee residents in 1993 due to negligence at a water treatment plant. It wastes our natural resources. To create the plastic bottles means to use 1.5 million barrels of oil each year just to keep up with the United States demand for bottled water. It costs more than gas! Municipal water costs pennies a day where as the average cost of bottled water is $1.09 for a 20oz. bottle. That is about $.05 cents an ounce and $6.40 a gallon.
